Book Summary

The book The Fold by An Na is a very unique book with a very important message that can help many teenagers, especially girls. Joyce is a junior in high school and comes from a traditional Korean family which can pose many problems in her high school, due to her appearance. Joyce has always struggled with her appearance and has always been a shy girl, until she falls in love with Jhon Ford Kang, a Korean-American boy from school. Slowly Joyce starts care about her appearance when Jhon signs her yearbook and confuses her for what Joyce calls “the ugliest girl in school”, lowering her self-esteem. When Joyce’s aunt, Gomo, wins the lottery and offers to buy each family member a present she offers Joyce a surgery of a lifetime.  Joyce, being compared to her sister daily about how she will never be as pretty as her has a tough time deciding whether or not she will accept the surgery.  As the book goes on Joyce slowly discovers to love herself for who she is and decides not the get the surgery to get folds placed on her eyelids.
